The Trip to Rosscarbery

On the 24th of August 2010 a group of 32 people from the locality went on a day trip to Rosscarbery. We stopped at the resource centre in Dunmanway on our way to stretch our legs. We received a very warm welcome from the staff who were working there. We then continued on our journey towards Rosscarbery.

This small historic town is set in picturesque surroundings overlooking a sandy inlet of the rugged West Cork coastline. The town grew up around a monastery, which was established by St. Fachtna in the latter half of the sixth century. It is a peaceful place with an attractive Square and nicely decorated buildings with traditional shop fronts. The wide variety of amenities within walking distance of the town make Rosscarbery an ideal place to visit. Our first port of call when we arrived in the town was the Celtic Ross hotel where we were treated to an excellent meal. After lunch we went exploring the town. Some of the people visited the church and the shops while others sat out in the sunshine looking at the beautiful views. After a very enjoyable few hours in Rosscarbery we made our way west towards Glandore.

Glandore, or Cuan Dor in Irish (meaning 'Harbour of the Oaks') is one of the prettiest villages in Ireland. Its position, in the path of the Gulf Stream ensures a mild climate all year round, consequently its flora is diverse and of great interest, as plants are found in bloom here, out of season. We spent a very enjoyable hour here taking in all the sights and the sea air. We then made our way homewards, we stopped in Coolcower House, just outside Macroom, for supper and a scoraíocht. We had music, dance, chat and laughter and it capped off a great day which was had by all.
