On the 27th of July 2010, 32 people from the locality headed west on a day trip to beautiful Glengarriff.
This village with a population of around 800 people is famed for its natural beauty. Situated on the world-renowned Bantry Bay where the mountains meet the sea, Glengarriff is the gateway to the Beara Peninsula, connecting the towns of Bantry and Kenmare. It has also acquired a fine reputation for the great variety of shops, galleries, accommodation, restaurants, pubs and services that are available. The population of Glengarriff expands significantly in size during the summer months due to the large number of visitors coming to marvel at the beauty of the area. We were all looking forward to an enjoyable day as we departed on our journey west, the weather added to this as it was warm and sunny. The scenery on the way to Glengarriff was spectacular and we stopped on a number of occasions along the way to take it all in.
We arrived in Glengarriff at lunchtime and our first port of call was to Casey’s Hotel where we enjoyed a lovely meal. After lunch we went exploring the area. Some of the group went to the shops where there were bargains galore, some went to the blue pool to see the boats which were lined up along the harbour and some people sat out under umbrellas and enjoyed the splendid views of the sea and nearby mountains.
At about 5 o’clock we left Glengarriff having enjoyed a great afternoon. The scenery was beautiful, the weather was excellent and the atmosphere was nice and relaxed. On the way home we stopped at Cuan Barra where we were treated to evening tea and a scoraíocht. There was a great atmosphere and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves with plenty of music, dancing, chat and laughter. At about 8 o’clock we made our way home from Cuan Barra. Everyone was tired and happy after a great day out. We are very fortunate to have a place like Glengarriff in close proximity. Hopefully we will visit there again in the not too distant future.
