The first scoraíocht of the Spring took place on Thursday the 18th of February. Entertainment on the day was provided by popular local musicians Denis Moynihan and Johnny Twomey. They both played in local bands which packed the local parish and crossroad halls in the past.
Denis and Johnny got the ball rolling at about half past two with the first song of the afternoon. Almost immediately people were up dancing to the music and songs that were so familiar to them in the dancehalls back then. They played the music to three songs after each other so there wasn’t much time to take a break, not that it seemed to bother anyone! At about four o’clock a nice cup of tea was served with scones and apple tart.
After the well deserved cup of tea Denis and Johnny cranked up the music again. They kept the songs coming all evening to the delight of their audience. Some of the Seanóirí added to the evening with performances of their own. The dancing didn’t stop until the last song had finished. We just had enough time to squeeze in a game of bingo and after that our Scoraíocht came to an end. On the buses on the way home the Seanóirí were reminiscing about the good times they had at these dances in the past. Denis and Johnny are excellent musicians and they sounded just as good as they always did. The February Scoraíocht was a great success and we are all looking forward to the next one.
