Presidential Visit

MFG-Meitheal Mhúscraí and Ionad Cultúrtha are delighted that the President, Mary McAleese accompanied by Dr. Martin McAleese, will be visiting Gaeltacht Mhúscraí on Saturday, 29th May, 2010.

The engagements will start with a visit to a Celebration of Voluntary Work, followed after lunch with a Recital performed by local artists in the Ionad Cultúrtha.  The final engagement in Múscraí will be in the Ionad Áise in Réidh na nDoirí in the afternoon, where the President will address the adult learners who are being presented with certificates, and where a mosaic and plaque to commemorate the visit will be unveiled.

Gaeltacht Mhúscraí has just over 4,000 population, and almost 100 community and voluntary groups. The richness of the cultural and social life of the area is due in large part to this wealth of community groups who work in the fields of music, food, farming, history, social housing, youth clubs, and much more. From pre-schools to eldercare, our lives are enhanced by the volunteers of our community, and they have good reason to be proud of their achievements. This event is being organised to showcase their achievements and encourage their efforts.

Ionad Cultúrtha is a wonderful asset to the area, where local people and those from further afield can see artists of the highest quality perform. This recital, to celebrate Féile Bealtaine with the senior citizens who attend the Scoraíocht and other events in conjunction with the Social Housing groups – Comhlacht Tithe & Forbairt an tSulán Teo. and Coiste Tithe Uibh Laoire, will feature local musicians and singers. During this concert, the President will visit the Ionad Cultúrtha, where she will be given a piece of glass art by Maura Whelan (a member of Ealaiontóirí Mhúscraí)

Almost 70 FETAC certificates are being presented to adult learners in the Ionad Áise, many of whom left school early or a long time ago. Their return to education has been facilitated by the Back to Education Initiative, and they have achieved certification in fields such as Childcare, First Aid, Computers, among others. The FETAC accreditation is recognised worldwide, and is part of the National Framework of Qualifications.  The President will address the participants, and the Coiste of MFG-Meitheal Mhúscraí are delighted to host her visit to the Ionad Áise, where the various programs run by the organisation are based.

Muintir na Gréine, the Ability Group, are presenting a mosaic to the Ionad Áise which they created in conjunction with local studio glass artist, Maura Whelan. The President will unveil the mosaic, together with a plaque which commemorates her visit to the Ionad Áise.

Coiste MFG-Meitheal Mhúscraí would like to acknowledge the support of the Dept. of Community Equality and Gaeltacht Affairs, through the Local & Community Development Program, the Community Services Program, and Dormant Accounts Fund, implemented by Pobal. The Back to Education Initiative under the Dept. of Education have always been extremely helpful and their support of adult learning is much appreciated. The HSE Community Work Dept. has support the work over the years, and together these programs have made a significant to community development in Gaeltacht Mhúscraí.
